ECO-Design Requirements for ErP(2005/32/EC)
The Directive 2005/32/EC on the eco-design of Energy-using Products (ErPs) was adopted in July 2005 and come into force in August 2007. It established a framework for the setting of community eco design requirements for ErPs with the aim to maintain sustainable development by increasing energy efficiency and the level of protection of the environment while increasing the security of the energy supply at the same time.
Due to the vast majority of products available in the market, causing various degrees of environmental impact, the Commission will set up implementing imeasures which are tailor made and applicable for a particular product category.
CE Mark is a self-declaration by the manufacturer or importer that the product sold in European Union is complied with relevant EU Directives regarding safety and environmental protection. The ErP Directive is part of the CE marking. A product affixed with the CE conformity marking implies that it is complied with the ErP Directive.
The Role of Manufacturers, Importers and Customers
An assessment of the ErP model throughout its lifecycle shall be performed based upon realistic assumptions about normal conditions and purposes of use. Manufacturers shall make use of the result to evaluate the design solutions and achieve better environmental performance.
If the manufacturer is not established in the European Union and in the absences of an authorised representative, importer has to ensure that the ErP placed in the market or put into service complies with the Directive and applicable IMs and keep the declaration of conformity and the technical documentation available.
ErP compliance implies that products having maximised environmental performance while maintaining their functional qualities. For consumers and the society as a whole, they are benefited from the security of energy supply and better environmental protection.
